When something changes at night
Breathing sounds different. Pain breaks through. Your loved one is restless or confused. In hospice, the first call should usually go to the hospice, not 911. Here’s why:
- A live person answers (714) 844-7777 24/7, including nights and weekends.
- Many problems can be handled at home, often with medicines and instructions the nurse has already left with you.
- Medicare rules matter. Hospital, ER and ambulance care for the terminal illness generally isn’t covered unless the hospice team arranges it or the problem is unrelated. If the team decides inpatient care is needed, the hospice must make the arrangements. (medicare.gov)
You’re always free to call 911 in a true emergency. We just want you to know there’s someone to call first.
Getting ready before it happens
On early visits, our nurse will:

- explain changes that are expected and what to do for each;
- leave a “comfort kit” plan, if the doctor orders one;
- talk about your loved one’s wishes, so night decisions are easier.
