Tailored Veterans’ Hospice Care
While hospice care does strive to provide care that focuses on quality of life by addressing the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the patient, we understand that this type of care looks a little different for veterans. Many veterans have experienced extreme levels of physical and emotional pain during their time in service, and dealing with a life-altering or terminal illness can feel triggering.
At Maxcare Hospice, we have experience dealing with the complex emotions that veterans will feel during this time, and our care team is equipped to manage them through:
- Emotional care
- Specialized physical care for pain management
- Spiritual care
As proud partners of the We Honor Veterans program run by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, we provide hospice care that is tailored to the unique needs of veterans.
Common Challenges Veterans Face
Because of their experience in service, veterans will often face challenges that civilians may not, and our care team is experienced in providing appropriate care.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder. One of the most common emotional challenges that veterans have to deal with is PTSD. An annual report from the National Center for PTSD showed that 38% of the 5.8 million veterans who served in 2024 suffered from PTSD. The symptoms can make a medical condition worse.
- Chronic Pain. The physical demands of military service can result in conditions like chronic pain, which will require pain management through medication and holistic practices like relaxation therapies and physical therapy.
- Traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are sadly common amongst veterans and can have long-term effects on patients’ lives, like physical, cognitive, and psychological impairments.
- Survivors guilt. Survivor’s guilt, also known as unresolved guilt, is commonly experienced during a terminal illness. Our bereavement specialists and spiritual counselors will help patients manage these symptoms.
