The end-of-life journey can be emotional, confusing, and even isolating for both the patient and their loved ones. But at Maxcare Hospice, we believe in more than just managing physical symptoms we believe in creating moments of connection, peace, and dignity. One of the most powerful ways we do this is through Therapeutic Music, a gentle, culturally sensitive approach that brings healing where words fall short.
What Is Therapeutic Music?

Therapeutic Music is a holistic, non-invasive form of care used to improve quality of life during the final stage of life. It involves listening to or creating music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs. Whether through singing, instruments, or recorded melodies, music can bring immense comfort, especially when tailored to reflect a patient’s personal culture, beliefs, and history.
Therapeutic Music Is Especially Helpful for Patients Who:
- Are experiencing emotional distress such as anxiety, depression, or fear
- Have cognitive challenges like dementia or Alzheimer’s
- Need spiritual support or cultural connection
- Are nonverbal or have difficulty communicating
- Are nearing the end of life and seeking comfort or peace
How Music Helps in Multicultural Communities Like Orange County
Orange County is home to vibrant and diverse populations, especially Vietnamese, Latino, and other communities with deep cultural roots. Therapeutic Music at Maxcare Hospice reflects this. We intentionally incorporate cultural music, traditional instruments, and spiritual songs that reconnect patients to:
- Their heritage and identity
- Younger generations of their family
- Religious or spiritual traditions
- Unspoken memories, milestones, and emotions
For example, playing Vietnamese folk songs or religious hymns in a patient’s native language can instantly awaken memories and create a sense of belonging. This is especially important for older patients whose connection to family and culture may feel distant at the end of life.
💖 Volunteer Spotlight: Betty Price
Uplifting Hearts Through Music, Patriotism, and Service
At Maxcare Hospice, the impact of Therapeutic Music is beautifully embodied by one of our most cherished volunteers: Betty Price.
Since August 7, 2013, Betty has generously donated more than 3,500 hours of service to our patients and their families. Through Therapeutic Music, heartfelt poetry, and humor, she brings joy to those in their final days, especially those who are nonverbal or withdrawn. Her sensitivity to even the subtlest responses, a tapping toe, a softened gaze, is what makes her presence so meaningful.
Honoring Veterans Through Music
Betty also plays an integral role in Maxcare’s Veteran Bedside Salutes. Together with our chaplain, social worker, and loved ones, she helps lead moving tributes with stirring patriotic music that honors the courage and sacrifice of those who served. Her participation adds a sacred, healing dimension to every ceremony.
Beyond hospice care, Betty’s passion for service spans continents. She’s taught English and shared music in Africa, the Philippines, Mexico, and Thailand. Closer to home, she volunteers at churches, nursing homes, and civic events like the Mayoral Prayer Breakfast.
Betty doesn’t just bring music, she brings presence, honor, and healing. Her service reminds us that Therapeutic Music isn’t just clinical, it’s human.
Benefits of Therapeutic Music in Hospice Care

- 🌱 Emotional Support and Memory Recall. Familiar songs help patients process feelings and relive joyful memories, even in advanced illness.
- 👪 Strengthened Family Bonds. Music becomes a shared language when words fail. Grandchildren can sing, spouses can dance, creating cherished last moments.
