When a loved one’s illness becomes serious, families across Orange County call us with the same honest questions. Here are the ones we hear most often, with straightforward answers. For the full list, visit our Hospice Care FAQ.
What is hospice care?
Hospice is comfort-focused care for people with a serious illness when the goal shifts from cure to quality of life. Maxcare Hospice brings nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers to the patient’s home or care facility, so the focus can stay on comfort, dignity, and time together.
Does Medicare cover hospice?
Yes. The Medicare Hospice Benefit (Part A) covers hospice care related to the terminal illness, including nursing visits, medications, and medical equipment related to that illness, usually at little or no cost to the family. Medi-Cal and many private insurance plans also cover hospice. If you are unsure about your coverage, call us and we can help you sort it out.
Who qualifies for hospice?
A patient generally qualifies when a doctor certifies a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. That is not a deadline: patients can continue receiving hospice beyond six months as long as they continue to qualify.
How do we get started?
Call Maxcare Hospice at (714) 844-7777. Families can call directly; you do not have to wait for a doctor. Physicians, hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities can also make a referral. Our team checks eligibility and can often begin care quickly.
Can hospice really happen at home?
Yes. We provide care wherever the patient calls home: private homes, assisted living communities, board-and-care homes, and skilled nursing facilities in Orange County and nearby areas. For many families, being at home among familiar surroundings is the most important part.
Can my parent keep their own doctor?
Yes. Patients can keep their own physician, who works together with our hospice medical director and care team.
What if something happens at night or on the weekend?
Our office is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and our nurses are on call 24/7 at (714) 844-7777. You are never on your own at 2 a.m.
Does choosing hospice mean giving up?
No. This is perhaps the question families struggle with most. Hospice focuses on comfort, dignity, and meaningful time with loved ones. A patient can stop hospice at any time and return to curative treatment if they choose.
Do you have Vietnamese-speaking staff?
Yes. Maxcare Hospice offers multicultural support, including Vietnamese-speaking assistance for patients and families. Having these conversations in the language your family is most comfortable with can make a hard time a little easier.
