What Is Hospice?
Hospice is comfort-focused care for someone with a serious illness when the goal shifts from cure to quality of life. It isn’t giving up. It’s about easing pain and other symptoms, protecting dignity, and making the most of the time together. You can stop hospice at any time and go back to treatment aimed at a cure.
When to Think About Hospice
It may be time to ask about hospice if your loved one:
- has an illness that treatment is no longer controlling, such as advanced heart or lung disease, cancer, dementia or kidney failure;
- keeps ending up in the hospital or the emergency room;
- is sleeping more, eating less, losing weight, or needing more help with everyday things;
- has told you they’re tired of treatments and want to be comfortable at home.
You don’t need to be sure before you reach out. We’re glad to talk it through with you, explain the options, and help you decide what’s right for your family. Read more in Early hospice admission: what it can mean for Westminster families.
How Hospice Is Paid For
For most patients, hospice is paid for by the Medicare hospice benefit under Medicare Part A. It covers care related to the terminal illness, including nursing visits, medications for pain and symptoms, and medical equipment, usually at little or no cost to the family. Many private plans also cover hospice. A patient generally qualifies when their doctor and the hospice doctor certify a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its usual course, and patients can keep their own physician.
The Four Levels of Hospice Care
Medicare defines four levels of hospice care, and we provide all four, moving between them as needs change:
- Routine home care. Regular visits from your nurse and aide for symptoms, medications, bathing and emotional support, at home.
- Continuous home care. If symptoms suddenly get worse, a nurse can stay for extended hours at home, sometimes overnight, until things settle.
- General inpatient care. When pain or symptoms can’t be managed at home, a short stay in a facility gives round-the-clock care until they’re under control.
- Respite care. Caregivers need rest too. Your loved one can stay in a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days at a time while the family recharges.
