Santa Ana is the county seat and one of Orange County’s largest cities, with neighborhoods as different as downtown, Floral Park, French Park and the west-side streets leading toward Little Saigon. Whatever the neighborhood, families starting hospice ask the same practical things: Which medicines will hospice pay for? What about the ones Mom has taken for years? Who decides?
Maxcare Hospice is a Vietnamese American family-owned hospice based in Westminster. We’ve been caring for Orange County families since 2011, and our team visits homes all over Santa Ana.

What hospice usually covers
Medicare’s hospice booklet lists services the plan of care can include, depending on the illness. Among them:
- prescription drugs for pain and symptom control;
- medical equipment, like wheelchairs or walkers;
- medical supplies, like bandages and catheters;
- nursing, aide and doctor services.
There can be a copayment of up to $5 for each outpatient prescription for pain and symptom management.
The list of what isn’t covered
Some medicines and services may be judged unrelated to the terminal illness. Medicare gives families two tools:
- You can ask the hospice for a written list of items, services and drugs it has decided aren’t related to the terminal illness, with the reasons. The hospice must provide it within 3 to 5 days of your request.
- You can ask for an addendum to the Hospice Election Statement listing what the hospice won’t cover.
Original Medicare or your drug plan may still cover unrelated medicines. (medicare.gov)
If you disagree
If you pay out of pocket for an item your doctor ordered and the hospice refused to provide it, Medicare says you can file an appeal. California’s free HICAP counselors can help you understand the process.
Santa Ana questions
Mom was at Orange County Global Medical Center. Can hospice start when she comes home? Yes. Ask the case manager to contact the hospice you choose. We’ll coordinate with the hospital and her doctor. Many Santa Ana families also come from Coastal Communities Hospital. We name these only as local hospitals; Maxcare isn’t affiliated with either.
Where can our family find support nearby? Santa Ana runs the Santa Ana Senior Center downtown and the Southwest Senior Center, both with transportation and a lunch café, according to the county’s 2026 list. The Orange County Office on Aging is also based in Santa Ana.
Santa Ana neighborhoods, hospitals and our office

Our team visits families in downtown Santa Ana, Floral Park, French Park and the west Santa Ana neighborhoods west of Harbor Boulevard, where Little Saigon reaches into the city.
Santa Ana families often come home from Orange County Global Medical Center on Tustin Avenue, South Coast Global Medical Center (formerly Coastal Communities Hospital) on Bristol Street, UCI Health – Orange (UCI Medical Center) in neighboring Orange, or Kaiser Permanente Irvine Medical Center. Maxcare is not affiliated with these hospitals.

How to start hospice in Santa Ana
- Call us at (714) 844-7777. A family member, a caregiver or the patient can call. A live person answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You don’t need a referral to call.
- We check eligibility with the doctor. Hospice requires a doctor’s certification. We work with your loved one’s doctor on that step, and we explain coverage before care starts.
- Care begins where your loved one lives. A nurse visits, listens to what matters to your family, and sets up a care plan with you.
The four levels of hospice care
Medicare defines four levels of hospice care. Maxcare provides all four and moves between them as your loved one’s needs change:
- Routine home care: regular visits from a nurse and aide at home for comfort, medicines, bathing and support.
- Continuous home care: if symptoms suddenly get worse, a nurse can stay for extended hours until things settle.
- General inpatient care: a short stay in a facility when pain or symptoms can’t be managed at home.
- Respite care: your loved one can stay in a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days so the family can rest.

Your hospice team
Every patient has a team that works with your own doctor and our hospice medical director: registered nurses who manage pain and symptoms and keep you informed, hospice aides for bathing and personal care, medical social workers for planning and resources, chaplains who respect your family’s beliefs, trained volunteers for companionship, and grief support for the family afterward.
