Families in Tustin are often spread out. One sibling lives in Old Town, another in Tustin Ranch, one is in another state, and a cousin who’s a nurse calls in with advice. When hospice comes up, getting everyone on the same page can feel harder than the medical decisions. A well-planned family meeting helps.
Maxcare Hospice is a Vietnamese American family-owned hospice based in Westminster. We’ve cared for Orange County families since 2011, and our team visits homes all over Tustin, including the newer neighborhoods at Tustin Legacy.

Before the meeting
- Decide who should be there. Include the people who will help with care and the people whose opinions carry weight, even if they join by video.
- Put your loved one’s wishes first. If they can speak for themselves, start with them. If they can’t, gather what they’ve said before, along with any advance directive.
- Write down the questions. Cost, care at home versus a facility, who stays overnight, what happens at night.
During the meeting
A hospice nurse or social worker can explain hospice in plain language and answer questions on the spot, so no family member has to be the expert. We can talk with the family in English or Vietnamese. Some of the things families decide together:
- where care will happen: at home, with a relative, or in a care facility;
- who will be the main caregiver, and who will give that person breaks;
- which doctor your loved one wants as their attending doctor;
- how the family will share updates.
Medicare basics everyone should hear
According to medicare.gov, a person with Medicare Part A can choose hospice when their hospice doctor and regular doctor (if they have one) certify a life expectancy of six months or less, they choose comfort care instead of treatment to cure the illness, and they sign a statement electing hospice. They can stop hospice later if they change their mind. Hospice is paid by Medicare Part A, and covered hospice services cost nothing, apart from small possible copays. (medicare.gov)
Tustin questions
Which hospitals do Tustin families usually come from? Foothill Regional Medical Center on Newport Avenue is Tustin’s hospital. Many families also come home from UCI Health – Orange or Providence St. Joseph Hospital. We name them only as nearby hospitals. Maxcare isn’t affiliated with any of them.
What if the family can’t agree? That’s common, and it’s okay. Our social worker can help everyone talk it through, and a chaplain can support families when faith is part of the question.
Is there support for caregivers in town? The Tustin Area Senior Center in Old Town offers transportation, technology help and a lunch café, according to the county’s 2026 senior center list.
