How to read Medicare Care Compare for any hospice
- Find the hospice. Go to medicare.gov/care-compare, choose “Hospice care”, and enter your ZIP code or the hospice’s name. Each hospice has a CMS Certification Number (ours is 551689) so you can be sure you’re looking at the right one.
- Read the family survey (CAHPS). After a patient dies, Medicare surveys a family caregiver about communication, timely help, pain and symptom support, emotional support, respect, and whether they would recommend the hospice. “Would definitely recommend” is a good single number to compare.
- Compare with the averages. Care Compare shows the California and national averages next to each hospice’s results. Compare a hospice with those averages, not just with another hospice.
- Look at the Hospice Care Index. It combines 10 measures from Medicare claims, such as visits near the end of life, gaps in nursing visits and live discharges, into one score from 0 to 10. Higher is better.
- Check the dates and footnotes. Each measure covers a specific period. “Not Available” or “Not Applicable” usually means there weren’t enough surveys or cases to report. It doesn’t mean a low score.
- Ask questions. Ask who answers the phone at night, which languages the team speaks, and how quickly they can visit. Then decide what’s right for your family. Every family chooses its own hospice.

About ratings you may see elsewhere
Some websites and directories show older survey results or ratings that belong to another company. Medicare’s Care Compare is the official source for our quality data. Our family also founded 24/7 Care at Home, a home health agency, in 2007. The CMS star ratings and Pinnacle awards credited to the family behind 24/7 Care at Home belong to 24/7 Care at Home, not to Maxcare Hospice.
Comparing hospice reviews in Orange County
Medicare’s August 2026 data lists 139 certified hospices in Orange County, California. Of these, 26 have a published "would definitely recommend" score from the Medicare family survey, and 18 have a family-survey star rating (CMS Provider Data Catalog: Hospice General Information and CAHPS Hospice Survey, August 2026). So for most hospices, Google reviews and a phone call are what families have to go on.
- Look at the count and the dates, not just the average. A rating built on many recent reviews tells you more than a perfect score from a few old ones.
- Read the lower-star reviews and how the hospice replied.
- Check the Medicare family survey on Care Compare when a hospice has one, and compare it with the California average shown on the same page.
- Check the date on any directory or list. Many sites copy Medicare and Google data and refresh it a few times a year.
- Call and ask. Ask who answers at night, which languages the care team speaks, and how often the nurse will visit.
Questions about hospice reviews
Where can I read reviews of Orange County hospices?
Start with two sources for every hospice you are considering: its Google reviews (count, recency and how the hospice replies) and its Medicare CAHPS family survey on Medicare Care Compare. Independent directories also gather this data; check the date they last updated it.
Are Google reviews or Medicare survey scores more reliable?
They measure different things. Anyone with a Google account can leave a Google review. The Medicare CAHPS Hospice Survey asks family caregivers the same standard questions after a loved one’s care. Read both together, and note the dates.
Why doesn’t Maxcare Hospice have a Medicare star rating?
Care Compare shows "Not Applicable" for our family-survey star in this period. Most Orange County hospices have no star yet, because Medicare publishes one once enough family surveys are completed. Our survey result is published: 78% of families would definitely recommend us (Medicare CAHPS survey, 10/2023-9/2025).
Does Maxcare Hospice pay for or reward reviews?
No. We never pay for, reward or write reviews. We simply ask families, if they wish, to share their honest experience on Google.
