“Does Dad have to give up his doctor?” It’s one of the first questions La Habra families ask. Many older residents have seen the same physician for twenty years, sometimes in La Habra, sometimes just over the county line in Whittier. The good news: under Medicare, your loved one can keep that relationship.
Maxcare Hospice is a Vietnamese American family-owned hospice based in Westminster. We’ve served Orange County families since 2011, and our team visits homes throughout La Habra, near La Habra Boulevard, Imperial Highway and Beach Boulevard.

Two doctors, one plan
Medicare explains it this way. A hospice doctor is part of the medical team. Your loved one can also choose to include their regular doctor, a nurse practitioner, or a physician assistant as the attending medical professional who helps supervise hospice care.
In everyday terms:
- the family doctor who knows your parent’s history can stay involved;
- the hospice doctor and nurses handle day-to-day comfort care and symptoms;
- both stay informed, and the hospice team coordinates the plan.
Both the hospice doctor and the regular doctor (if there is one) certify that the person is eligible for hospice at the start. (medicare.gov)
When the doctor is in another county
La Habra sits on the Orange County line, so it’s common for a patient’s doctor or hospital to be in Los Angeles County, such as PIH Health Whittier Hospital or Whittier Hospital Medical Center. That’s no obstacle. We coordinate with doctors and hospitals on either side. We name these hospitals, and Providence St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, only as places La Habra families use; Maxcare isn’t affiliated with any of them.
La Habra questions
What if our doctor doesn’t bring up hospice? You can bring it up, or call us yourself. We’ll check eligibility and contact the doctor. Hospice still needs a doctor’s certification, so we work with them, not around them.
Can the regular doctor still see Dad for other health problems? Yes. Medicare continues to cover care for conditions that aren’t related to the terminal illness, with the usual costs.
Is there local support for caregivers? The La Habra Community Center on La Habra Boulevard offers transportation, information and referral and a lunch café, according to the county’s 2026 senior center list.

Naming someone to speak for your loved one
An advance health care directive lets a person name a health care agent who can make medical decisions if they can’t speak for themselves. California has a standard form. If your parent hasn’t named anyone, it’s worth doing early, while they can still say what they want. Our social worker can help your family get started.
Families, physicians, hospitals and facilities can refer by calling (714) 844-7777. A live person answers 24/7, and we’ll review eligibility and answer your questions. Maxcare Hospice is ACHC-accredited.
