Families in Los Alamitos and neighboring Rossmoor usually have a choice of hospices, and the choice can feel overwhelming when you’re already tired and worried. You don’t need to become an expert overnight. A few good questions, asked early, will tell you a lot.
Maxcare Hospice is a Vietnamese American family-owned hospice based in Westminster. We’ve been caring for Orange County families since 2011, including homes around Katella Avenue, near the Joint Forces Training Base, and across Rossmoor.

Where to start looking
Medicare suggests three places to find hospice providers: talk to your doctor, use Medicare Care Compare to find Medicare-approved hospices in your area, or contact your state hospice organization. Medicare only covers hospice care from a Medicare-approved provider. If your loved one has a Medicare Advantage plan, the plan must help you locate a Medicare-approved hospice in your area.
Questions worth asking any hospice
- When can a nurse make the first visit?
- Who answers the phone at night and on weekends?
- How often will the nurse and aide visit at first?
- Does your team speak the languages our family speaks?
- How do you coordinate with our family doctor?
- What support do you offer the family after a death?
Write the answers down. Compare how each hospice made you feel, not just what they said.
You can change your mind
Medicare gives your loved one the right to change hospice providers once during each benefit period. Your loved one can also stop hospice altogether and return to treatment aimed at a cure. Choosing a hospice isn’t a contract you’re stuck in. (medicare.gov)
Los Alamitos questions
The discharge planner at UCI Health – Los Alamitos gave us a list. Can we choose a hospice that isn’t first on it? Yes. The choice belongs to your family. Tell the case manager which hospice you’d like and they will send the referral. (We mention the hospital only because it’s in town; Maxcare isn’t affiliated with it.)
Can you visit in Rossmoor? Yes. Rossmoor is within the Orange County area we serve.
Is there a community resource nearby? The Los Alamitos Community Center on Oak Street offers support groups, information and referral, food distribution and a lunch café, according to the county’s 2026 senior center list.
