Can hospice come to a facility?
Yes. Medicare says you can usually get hospice care where you live, including an assisted living facility or a nursing home. Our nurses, aides, social worker and chaplain visit the facility just as they would visit a private home.
How we work with facility staff
Facility caregivers already know your parent’s routines, likes and quirks. We build on that:
- our nurse shares the comfort-care plan with the facility team;
- hospice aides add extra help with bathing and personal care;
- we bring hospice-related medicines, equipment and supplies;
- the family gets updates from both the facility and the hospice.
Who pays for what
Medicare’s hospice benefit covers hospice care. It doesn’t cover room and board in a facility. That means the facility’s monthly charge usually stays the family’s responsibility, or the responsibility of whatever program pays it today. (medicare.gov)

Placentia questions
Dad is in a small board-and-care home. Is that different from assisted living? Board-and-care homes are usually smaller, with just a few residents. Hospice works the same way: we come to him there and work with the caregivers who look after him daily.
Which hospitals do Placentia families usually come from? Often Providence St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton or Kaiser Permanente’s Anaheim Medical Center. We name them only as nearby hospitals; Maxcare isn’t affiliated with either.
Is there a local place for families to get help? The Placentia Senior Center on Bradford Avenue offers recreational classes, transportation and a lunch café, according to the county’s 2026 senior center list.

Making a facility room feel like home
Small touches help: family photos, a favorite blanket, music your parent loves, a familiar scent. Visit at different times of day so you meet different staff. Keep a notebook in the room so family, facility caregivers and the hospice team can leave each other short notes.
When a facility suggests hospice
Sometimes it’s the assisted living director or a board-and-care owner who first mentions hospice, after noticing a parent eating less or needing much more help. That suggestion is worth taking seriously. Ask them what they’ve seen, then call us or your parent’s doctor. A conversation lets everyone compare notes before anything changes.
