Grief support is part of hospice
Medicare’s hospice booklet lists grief and loss counseling for you and your family among the services a hospice plan of care can include. In practice, that support can start well before a death:
- a social worker or counselor who checks in on the main caregiver;
- a chaplain who offers spiritual support that fits your family’s faith, or none at all;
- help preparing children and grandchildren for what’s ahead;
- bereavement contact for the family after the death.

Grief looks different for everyone
Some people cry. Some get very busy. Some feel relief and then guilt about the relief. All of that is normal. We tell families there’s no “right way” to grieve, and no deadline.
Things that help in the early weeks
- Keep simple routines: meals, a walk, regular sleep.
- Let friends help with practical things like groceries or rides.
- Talk about your loved one; saying their name out loud is healthy.
- Reach out to us if the grief feels too heavy to carry.

Which hospitals do Yorba Linda families usually come from? Often Kaiser Permanente’s Anaheim Medical Center on East La Palma Avenue or Providence St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton. We name them only as nearby hospitals; Maxcare isn’t affiliated with either.
Can a spouse get support even if they aren’t the main caregiver? Yes. Grief and loss counseling is for the family, not just one person.
Are there local places to find community after a loss? The Yorba Linda Community Center on Casa Loma Avenue runs the city’s older adult programs, including support and a lunch café, according to the county’s 2026 senior center list.

Can my family call directly, or do we need a doctor’s referral?
Your family can call (714) 844-7777 directly. We check eligibility and work with your doctor. A doctor still needs to certify eligibility before hospice begins.
Who pays for hospice?
