What hospice includes
Medicare defines four levels of hospice care. Maxcare provides all four and moves between them as your loved one’s needs change:
- Routine home care: regular visits from a nurse and aide at home for comfort, medicines, bathing and support.
- Continuous home care: if symptoms suddenly get worse, a nurse can stay for extended hours until things settle.
- General inpatient care: a short stay in a facility when pain or symptoms can’t be managed at home.
- Respite care: your loved one can stay in a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days so the family can rest.

Paying for hospice
For most patients, hospice is covered by the Medicare Hospice Benefit under Medicare Part A. Many private insurance plans also cover hospice; we check coverage with you. A patient generally qualifies when a doctor certifies a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its usual course. Patients can stop hospice at any time.
