The people who may visit
Medicare’s hospice booklet lists the people who can be part of a hospice care team. Here is what they do, in plain words:
- Hospice doctor. Oversees the medical side of care. Your loved one can also keep their regular doctor or nurse practitioner as the attending medical professional.
- Nurse. Visits regularly, manages pain and other symptoms, and teaches the family what to expect.
- Hospice aide. Helps with bathing, grooming and personal care, often the visits families come to rely on most.

There’s no single schedule. The plan of care sets it, and it changes as needs change. Early on, a nurse might come a couple of times a week and an aide a few times a week for bathing. As care needs grow, visits usually increase. Social worker and chaplain visits are planned with the family, and volunteers can be added if you’d like company for your loved one or an hour to run errands.

- Continuous home care: if symptoms suddenly get worse, a nurse can stay for extended hours until things settle.
- General inpatient care: a short stay in a facility when pain or symptoms can’t be managed at home.
- Respite care: your loved one can stay in a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days so the family can rest.
