What respite care is
Medicare’s hospice booklet describes it like this: if your usual caregiver, such as a family member, needs rest, your loved one can get inpatient respite care in a Medicare-approved facility, like a hospice inpatient facility, a hospital or a nursing home. The hospice arranges it.
- Each respite stay can last up to 5 days.
- Respite can happen more than once, but only occasionally.
- There may be a small copayment: up to 5% of the Medicare-approved amount for inpatient respite care.

Other ways hospice lightens the load
Respite is one tool. Day to day, the hospice team also helps by:
- sending aides to help with bathing and personal care;
- having a live person answer (714) 844-7777 24/7, so caregivers aren’t alone at 3 a.m.;
- providing medical equipment and supplies related to the illness;
- offering social work, chaplain and volunteer support for the family.
Signs a caregiver needs a break
Please tell us if you notice any of these in yourself or a family member: trouble sleeping, skipping your own doctor visits, feeling irritable or hopeless, or getting sick more often. Asking for help is part of good caregiving.
La Palma questions
My husband was at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital. Can hospice begin from there? Yes. Ask the case manager to contact the hospice your family chooses. We’ll coordinate with the hospital team and his doctor. We name the hospital only because it’s in town; Maxcare isn’t affiliated with it.
Where can I find caregiver resources nearby? The La Palma Community Center on Walker Street runs the city’s older adult programs, including information and referral, according to the county’s 2026 senior center list.

Hospice volunteers
Trained volunteers are part of many hospice teams. A volunteer might sit with your loved one, read aloud, play music they like, or simply keep them company while a caregiver takes a walk or goes to the store. If an hour of help each week would make a difference, tell us and we’ll see what we can arrange.
Respite at home, too
Not every break needs a facility stay. Families can also build small breaks into the week: an aide visit timed so the caregiver can nap, a volunteer visit during a standing appointment, or a relative who takes one evening a week. We’ll help you plan it.

Is there Vietnamese-speaking hospice care in La Palma?
Yes. Maxcare Hospice has Vietnamese-speaking nurses, aides and office staff, and we care for patients at home in La Palma and in nearby Buena Park and Cypress. Our office is at 13800 Arizona St #201, Westminster.
Can my family call directly, or do we need a doctor’s referral?
Your family can call (714) 844-7777 directly. We check eligibility and work with your doctor. A doctor still needs to certify eligibility before hospice begins.
Who pays for hospice?
Medicare Part A covers hospice for patients who qualify. Call us to ask about your coverage.
