When Costa Mesa families picture hospice, they usually picture a nurse. What surprises them is everything else that can come with it: a hospital bed delivered to the living room, supplies they no longer have to buy, someone to talk with about food when appetite fades. Here’s what a hospice plan of care can include.
Maxcare Hospice is a Vietnamese American family-owned hospice based in Westminster. We’ve cared for Orange County families since 2011, and our team visits Costa Mesa homes on the Westside, the Eastside and in Mesa Verde, and in the neighborhoods near Fairview Park and South Coast Plaza.

What the plan of care can include
Depending on the illness, Medicare’s hospice booklet says a plan of care can include:
- doctor and nursing services;
- medical equipment, like wheelchairs, walkers or a hospital bed;
- medical supplies, like bandages and catheters;
- prescription drugs for pain and symptom control;
- hospice aide and homemaker services;
- physical and occupational therapy and speech-language pathology;
- social worker services and dietary counseling;
- grief and loss counseling for the patient and family;
- short-term inpatient and respite care.

About food and appetite
Eating less near the end of life is natural, but it’s hard for families to watch, especially in homes where cooking for someone is how love is shown. Dietary counseling helps families understand what’s happening, find foods that bring comfort, and let go of the pressure to make someone eat.
Setting up the home
Our nurse will look at the space with you. Often the living room becomes the center of care: easier to reach, with room for a bed and for family to sit close. Equipment related to the illness is part of the hospice benefit.

When equipment is no longer needed
Families sometimes worry about what happens to a hospital bed or oxygen equipment later. You don’t have to arrange anything yourself. The hospice coordinates pickup when the equipment is no longer needed. And if something isn’t working, say a bed control or a wheelchair brake, call us any time; a live person answers 24/7 and can help sort it out.
What to have ready for the first visit
Insurance cards, a list of current medicines (or the bottles themselves), the name of the doctor your loved one wants involved, and any advance directive. Don’t worry if something is missing. We’ll fill in the gaps together.
