What Is Hospice?
Hospice is comfort-focused care for someone with a serious illness when the goal shifts from cure to quality of life. It isn’t giving up. It’s about easing pain and other symptoms, protecting dignity, and making the most of the time together, usually at home. A patient can stop hospice at any time and go back to treatment aimed at a cure.
When to Think About Hospice
It may be time to ask about hospice if your loved one:
- has an illness that treatment is no longer controlling, such as advanced heart or lung disease, cancer, dementia or kidney failure;
- keeps going back to the hospital or the emergency room;
- is sleeping more, eating less, losing weight, or needing more help with everyday tasks;
- has said they’re tired of treatments and want to be comfortable at home.

Who Pays for Hospice, Including Medicare Advantage
For most patients, hospice is paid for by the Medicare hospice benefit under Medicare Part A. It covers care related to the terminal illness, including nursing visits, medications for pain and symptoms, and medical equipment. A patient generally qualifies when their doctor and the hospice doctor certify a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its usual course.
Many Huntington Beach retirees have a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare’s hospice booklet says that once someone starts hospice care, Original Medicare covers everything needed for the terminal illness, even if they stay in a Medicare Advantage plan. The hospice must be Medicare-approved, and a Medicare Advantage plan must help members find one in their area.
If your loved one keeps paying the plan’s premiums, the plan still covers extra benefits it offers, such as dental and vision; covered services for health problems not related to the terminal illness; and drugs not related to the terminal illness, if the plan includes drug coverage. The Four Levels of Hospice Care
Medicare defines four levels of hospice care, and we provide all four, moving between them as needs change:
- Routine home care. Regular visits from your nurse and aide for symptoms, medications, bathing and emotional support at home.
- Continuous home care. If symptoms suddenly get worse, a nurse can stay for extended hours at home until things settle.
- General inpatient care. When pain or symptoms can’t be managed at home, a short stay in a facility provides round-the-clock care until they’re under control.
- Respite care. Caregivers need rest too. Your loved one can stay in a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days at a time while the family recharges.

Every patient has an interdisciplinary team that works with your own doctor and our hospice medical director:
- Registered nurses who manage pain and symptoms and keep the family informed.
- Hospice aides who help with bathing, grooming and personal care.

POLST and Advance Directives
California uses a form called POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) to record a seriously ill person’s wishes about treatments like CPR. It is signed by the patient (or their legal decision-maker) and by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. If your loved one doesn’t have one, ask their doctor. Our nurse and social worker can explain the form and help your family talk through the choices. Keep a copy where emergency responders can find it, such as on the refrigerator.
