What Medicare covers
Hospice is covered by Medicare Part A. Once your loved one chooses hospice, the benefit should cover everything needed for the terminal illness and related conditions, as long as the care comes from a Medicare-approved hospice. That includes nursing visits, aide visits, medical equipment and supplies, and medicines for pain and symptom control.
The small costs that can come up
According to medicare.gov:
- Medicines: a copayment of up to $5 for each prescription for pain and symptom management.
- Inpatient respite care: you may pay 5% of the Medicare-approved amount when your loved one stays in a facility for a short time so the caregiver can rest.
- Other health problems: Original Medicare still covers care for conditions unrelated to the terminal illness, with the usual deductibles and coinsurance.
What isn’t covered
- Room and board at home, in a nursing home, or in a hospice inpatient facility, unless the hospice team arranges a short inpatient or respite stay.
- Treatment meant to cure the terminal illness.
- Hospital or ER care, or ambulance rides, for the terminal illness that the hospice team didn’t arrange. That’s why we ask families to call us first.

Providence St. Jude Medical Center on Valencia Mesa Drive is Fullerton’s hospital, and many families first discuss hospice there. We name it only as a local hospital. Maxcare isn’t affiliated with it.

Will hospice bill us after the fact? The hospice must tell you if any drugs or services aren’t covered, and why, and whether you’d have to pay. You can also ask for a written list of anything the hospice decided isn’t related to the terminal illness.
